Happy Thanksgiving!

Six-day-old Benjamin relaxed at home with Mom,
watched some movies and had his own Thanksgiving Dinner.

Joseph was very excited to play with his cousins and eat his
favorite dessert, vanilla ice cream.

Allyse and Joshua worked on some coloring after dinner.

Angelina stayed home with Benjamin and Mom.
They found some of Allyse's old clothes and so
Angelina was pleased to wear her old nightie.

Benjamin enjoyed his first Thanksgiving.

Baby Chronicles

Baby Benjamin is changing on almost a daily basis.
His eyes have a bluish hue and his hair appears to
have lightened a little since the day he was born.

Benjamin Bradley Ballard

The name is final: Benjamin Bradley Ballard. His middle name was still in play for a while after he was born. We were thinking about Adam, Matthew and Julene's choice, Fielding. I told her that if Benjamin was born on Grandpapa's birthday, that would agree to Fielding. However, we decided that since he waited about a week to be born on my birthday, that he should, in part, carry my name.

Overdue

The baby is now six days overdue, which is the longest for any of our children. It is especially odd since by the fifth child, everyone expects the baby sooner rather than later.

I was thinking of alternative titles to this post:
  • AAAARRGG - already used it
  • No News is Good News - no way
  • All's Quiet on the Western Front - maybe
  • I Got You Babe - not yet
  • I Want My Baby Back, Baby Back, Baby Back - eewww
  • Close, But No Cigar
In any event, we expect to provide news soon, but nothing yet. Julene did run to the hospital in the middle of last night due to some light bleeding, but it turned out to be nothing serious, just as we expected. We will keep you posted.

Update:

If the baby has not come by Sunday, Julene will be induced that morning.

Happy 169th Birthday, Grandpapa!

Joseph F. Smith, my great-great-grandfather, was born 169 years ago today. My grandmother Ellen always called him Grandpapa.

Lately, I have been getting into genealogy and family history. I was searching the internet for some information on my great-grandmother and great-grandfather, Minerva Smith Miller (Joseph F.'s daughter) and Matthew Alexander Miller, and I found the above photo on Wikipedia. I immediately assumed that it was the same photo as one that my mother has (of which we made a photocopy a few years ago).

I got out my copy of the Smith family photo and compared it to the Wikipedia one, and I started noticing minor differences. My great-grandmother, Minerva Miller, is in the row behind Joseph F. Smith, the third woman to the right of him (she is the petite woman wearing a dark dress with a white collar with dark upswept hair). Immediately behind her is my great-grandfather, Matthew Miller. He is holding my great-uncle, Willard Miller. I first noticed a difference in the two photos with Matthew and Willard, as Willard is to the right of Matthew in the above photo, but Willard is on Matthew's left in the copy that I have.

I started to look closer at the Wikipedia photo and noticed a number of people have minor differences. However, in the above photo, there is one major difference. Just to the left of Joseph F. Smith, there is a little boy who is picking his nose (click on the photo to enlarge). I guess it should come as no surprise that this one did not become the official one that went in the family's photo album.

Prindsessen paa Ærten

With the new baby coming (or is he), we knew that we would have to find furniture for Angelina's bedroom and use her current furniture for the baby's new room. For months, we have been scouring Craigslist, ebay and sales advertisements in hopes that we could find something girly for Angelina that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

Eureka! Julene found a beautiful bedroom set on Craigslist for a very reasonable price. However, when she went to look at the set, the seller told her that he only had it in full size, but that he would give it to us for the same price as the twin size set. We decided that a full size set would fit better in Allyse's room, so on Saturday, we played a game of musical rooms.

I took apart the crib and took the baby furniture down to the new baby's room. Then I took Allyse's bed apart and moved her furniture into Angelina's room.

It was really hard to gauge how Angelina was going to react, as she tends to be quite possessive and she has invested heavily in being the baby. Since the crib is a primary symbol of her infancy, we thought that she might reject the new bed. However, when it came to bedtime, she seemed pleased to be in a new big bed, and she slept all night without any incident.

With Allyse's new bedroom set, I brought most of it upstairs by myself, but I had to call on a neighbor to help with the desk and the dresser. However, the toughest part was the shopping. I needed to find bedrails for Angelina and a boxspring and mattress for Allyse.

Every pregnant woman in Southern Nevada, along with her shopping entourage, must have been at Babies R Us when I went to buy bedrails. It seemed nearly impossible to get around the store, but not because of the bellies. Everywhere I went there was a pregnant woman holding court with her family and friends cooing, oohing and ahhing over anything that she would touch or display.

After I bought the bedrails, I went to look for a mattress set for Allyse. I went to four stores trying to find somebody who actually had something in stock. At the fourth store, they were determined to sell me something. When I found what I wanted, of course, they didn't have it in stock. They went through several mattresses, each progressively more expensive, offering it to me at the same price as the one that I first wanted. By the time they found a mattress in stock, they were offering it to me at less than one-half of its retail price (which gives me a little insight into the markup).

I finally got the mattress set home and we finished Allyse's new bed. When I looked at my little Allyse atop her new bed, I was reminded of the Hans Christian Andersen folktale, The Princess and the Pea (which is the title of this post, in Danish). She truly is a princess.

Go Ahead, Make My Day

On Wednesday, my kind wife made me a lunch to take to work. I ran off, forgetting she had done so. That same morning, she had a doctor appointment across the street from my office, so she brought the lunch to me after the appointment.

Julene called me and had me meet her outside my office in the parking lot. When I went out to get the lunch, she opened the door by Angelina, so I talked and played with Angelina for a minute, and then we said goodbye.

A few minutes later, Julene called me on my cell phone and told me that as they were pulling away, Angelina said, "Mommy, I love daddy." Julene asked, "You love daddy?" and she replied, "Yeah. I love him."

That made my day.

AAAARRGG!

Joseph and Joshua decided that their ships
needed to be painted.

Joseph's ship: The "Dauntless" is a work in progress.
"Oh, the Dauntless is the power in these waters, true enough."
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Is there any question about how
happy this boy is?

Joshua's ship: The Black Pearl.
"Oh, and no ship that's not crewed by the damned and
captained by a man so evil that Hell itself spat him back
out could possibly have black sails, therefore couldn't
possibly be any other ship than the Black Pearl.
Is that what you're telling me?"
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Joshua's color scheme was simple: basic black.

The Dauntless and the Black Pearl finished and
ready to sail the Spanish Main.

I need to give credit where it is due. The middle
four photos were taken by my little budding
photographer, Allyse.

Under Siege

I was doing some work in the living room when Julene let out a yelp. She was startled by a rather large something crawling on the floor near the laundry room. This spider was about one and one-half inches from tip to tip.

I am not the best at identifying spider species, so I took pictures of it before I separated its spirit from its earthly tabernacle. Living in the desert, I am only concerned about two species of spiders: the ubiquitous black widow and the brown recluse. This was obviously not a black widow, so I Googled the brown recluse. Fortunately, our spider did not fit the profile.

However, looking up the brown recluse, I found the following news story:
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- A UC Riverside study shows that where brown recluse spiders are common, people can co-habitate with them and bites are infrequent. The study by Rick Vetter, staff research associate in the department of entomology at UC Riverside and an internationally known expert on spiders, focused on 2,055 brown recluse spiders collected in a Kansas home of a family of four. Despite the abundance of spiders, no one in the family received bites from the potentially dangerous arachnids.
I know the point of the story is that the brown recluse might not be such a big threat, but I kind of lost any possibility of not being completely creeped out when it said the researchers found 2,055 brown recluse spiders in one house. Now I'm a tolerant guy, but I cannot imagine sharing my home with 2,055 brown recluse spiders. I'm pretty sure that I could not sleep another night in that house.

At least we have the comfort that our bug defenses are working, somewhat. We found the beauty below, which was
TWO INCHES from tip to tip, stuck in the sticky trap at the corner of our garage door. However, without the trap, we wouldn't have even known such a creature was lurking around in our garage. As it turns out, the trap has probably caused more discomfort than peace of mind. It's kind of like the ocean: if I could actually see what was swimming near me, I would probably spend a lot more time building sand castles!

All I can say is 2,055! I mean, sheeesh, what finally motivated them to take care of the problem.

"Uh, honey, we now have over 2,000 brown recluse spiders in our home. Do you think we should we call an exterminator?"

"Yeah. 1,900 was okay, but over 2,000, well, that's just a few too many."

BLAAAAAHHG

Last Thursday I started feeling that familiar, uncomfortable tickle in my throat. By the afternoon, my throat was getting raw and I knew what was coming. By the evening I was sneezing and had a full blown cold, and I have had the blahs ever since.

It's not like it came as a surprise. I had a doctor deposition last Tuesday and the opposing attorney was spewing his viral infection all over the place. I could tell the doctor was very uncomfortable with the attorney sneezing all over the place. The doctor even offered him prescription samples.

One mitigating factor is I now have a cough medicine called Promethazine. It is really interesting what you can learn when you actually read the volumes of information that come with prescription drugs (thank you lawyers).

Promethazine was used years ago as an antipsychotic drug. This could explain why, when I take the medicine, I still feel awful, but the thing is, I am so mellow that I just don't care. Pregnant wife - no problem. Telemarketers - who cares. Screaming kids - bring it on.

I found some advise about protecting against the common cold. It says to:
Avoid stress, get a good night's sleep, avoid cigarette smoke, include in your diet plenty of whole foods, fruit, vegetables and avoid dairy products, eggs, excessive meat, excessive sugar, saturated fats and alcohol.
Oh well, at least I don't smoke and drink.

Joseph's Day

Saturday was Joseph's day with Dad. We started at Home Depot Kid's Workshop where, by miraculous coincidence, the project for the day was a pirate ship. Joseph was as about as happy as a boy can be.

When we finished his ship, Joseph wanted to go to the library. The day before, his first grade class went to the library on a field trip. He was distraught about not having a library card, so we went to sign him up.

A few minutes later, all was right with the world as Joseph had a new pirate ship and a new library card.

From Even to Odd

There is a natural symmetry of having two boys and two girls, which lends balance when I post photos of the children. According to Julene's visit with the doctor today, we will change from even to odd any day now, and our symmetry will be lost. Lest I seem wistful regarding losing balance, I should add that what we are gaining in a new son is far more important.

We each made our predictions a few days ago (before gaining inside information) for when the baby will arrive. Based on today's information, I now wonder whether we all have overshot the due date. For the record, the predictions are as follows:
  • Brad - November 6th
  • Joseph - November 7th
  • Allyse - November 8th
  • Joshua - November 9th
  • Perinatologist - November 9th
  • Julene - November 10th
  • OB/GYN - November 11th
